Vol.10 Housing
2024
Housing remains an omnipotent, pressing and complex issue within today's built environment. Inflection vol.10 engages with all scales of the topic, from the systematic challenges of insecurity and affordability to the intimate patterns of life we map to our dwellings. How can our discipline meaningfully embrace technological advances while continually being critical in pursuing spatial, environmental, and culturally conscious design?

Housing discussion today is dominated by topics such as demographics, new typologies, and promises of social or economic reform through architectural means. In many ways, we have not recovered from the social project promised by modernist housing.
But what of the material reality of buildings, and of architects’ preoccupation before the 20th century? That is, of architectural elements, proportions and details, of facade composition and the hierarchy and arrangement of rooms. In our own context, the art of building has been dismissed in favour of a technocratic and functionalist-driven approach to architecture.

The former department store Kaufhof occupies at the threshold between the main station and the Altstadt Nürnberg. Its immediate context is characterised by a loose assembly of things, an almost festival-like atmosphere—dense, provisional, and heterogeneous. The transformation of the department store into housing and a market hall consists of two primary actions: the opening of the corners and the introduction of a courtyard.

The two apartment buildings in Zurich-Schwamendingen form a loosely connected pair within the former Gartenstadt suburb. They share a common material and elemental language, while differing in their urban expression. Together, they frame a densely planted garden.

The project seeks to operate within the context of the contemporary Australian suburb, an area dominated by volume-built single-family houses.
The suburban villa is reinterpreted through a gentle transformation from a single-family dwelling into a triplex. This shift is achieved through the re-evaluation of seemingly mundane architectural elements, proportions, and a room-based plan that both connects and separates, negotiating relationships within and between families.

The corten steel sound wall lining Todd street is currently a linear buffer, differentiating the densely urban, single-residential, and industrial zones. Despite its material toughness, the site remains inherently temporary, reserved for the future expansion of port activities. This edge condition, a result of contemporary city zoning, raises questions about land ownership and future public access.
